Strategic Labour Needs & Training

As part of our comprehensive approach to Responsible Procurement DSJV operates a training and employment programme targeted at removing barriers to people accessing opportunities and offering young people an insight into careers and vocations in a variety of professional and non-professional roles or continue their graduate studies.

We understand that our projects operate on a significant scale and are often situated in areas that suffer from high rates of unemployment, low attainment or poor access to employment opportunities. This means that our projects have the capacity to lever significant opportunities to leave a lasting and sustainable skills legacy, by engaging local people from a variety of experience, skills and backgrounds to work on the project and improve their skills and quality of life.

We also recognise that the future of our business relies on enabling young people to have the confidence, enthusiasm and commitment to work on our projects and grow their capabilities with us. The future of the engineering, construction and infrastructure industries also relies on businesses making this sort of commitment to invest in the future of young people.

That is why we work with a number of partner organisations that are helping us to achieve our ambitions targets of engaging over 30 apprentices, 40 previously unemployed or local people, 4 graduates on a graduate training scheme and providing over 2,000 work experience, taster placement and training days over the next four years.

These include:

  • University of East London
  • National Apprenticeship Service
  • Jobcentre Plus
  • Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA)
  • Construction Skills


We offer a range of training and employment programmes according to different categories which are described below:

  • Apprentices: employed for a minimum of 16 hours a week, undertaking a recognised structured programme of training leading to the completion of a full apprenticeship.

  • Job starts: employed for 16 hours a week or more beginning a position of employment with a minimum duration of 6 months.

  • Graduates: employed for a minimum of 16 hours a week or more who has completed their undergraduate degree within the last 12 months and who is beginning an employment position on a formal graduate trainee scheme with a minimum duration of 6 months.

  • Placements: intended to enable an individual to learn, develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in relation to the employment market that lasts between 11 days and 100 days and which includes elements of job coaching and support.

  • Tasters: intended to introduce an individual to a specific industry, occupation or position and may last between 1 and 10 days.

  • Work Force Skills: workforce training or development activity for full time employed individuals that forms part of an accredited course of learning and development.


Training
Training and Development has been developed in line with DSJV's overall corporate vision and strategy as a responsible business. It reflects our core belief in the need to develop all employees on an equal and diverse basis, whether employed on a full-time or part-time, temporary or permanent basis.

DSJV considers its workforce to be a valuable asset and believes that it should strategically invest in that asset, to the benefit of the business and its employees.

DSJV believes that all its employees have the potential to develop, both in their professional role and on a personal level. DSJV will endeavour to provide opportunities for this development.
